In commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of Japan-Czech Republic Relations
Held to mark the 100th anniversary of Czech-Japan diplomatic relations, this exhibition explores the artistic interaction between the two cultures that took place against a complex historical background. Focus is on Japonism, a craze for Japanese culture that took Europe by storm at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries; and on Czech artists Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939), who was active in Paris at this time, and Emil Orlik (1870–1932), who studied ukiyo-e and woodblock printmaking in Japan and later introduced them to Europe.
