和歌山県は日本全国で6番目に多い移民を輩出した「移民県」であり、県内の各研究機関が、それぞれの専門的見地や地理的特性に基づいて、近代移民史に関わる研究を蓄積してきました。そうした個別の活動を積極的に繋ぎ合わせ、また知見の共有を通じて社会からの理解を広げることを目指して、2022年からは和歌山県立近代美術館が中心となり、「和歌山移民研究を軸とした国際交流事業実行委員会」を組織しています。これを「和歌山」のみならず「国際」と位置付けたのは、近代から現代にまたがる「移民」という歴史的事象は決して片側のみで捉えられるものではなく、移民として出ていく側／移民を向かえる側の双方向的視点からの検証が必要であると考えるからです。

活動の初年度である2022年は、全米日系人博物館との連携により、研究交流の土台を整えることを目指しました。そして12月には国内外から研究者を迎え、「和歌山／アメリカ：研究の「現在地」」と題したシンポジウムを実施しました。その目的は、これまでの成果と視点を共有することであり、移民資料の収集活動や和歌山ゆかりの作家についての個別研究、また総合的な移民美術史へのアプローチという、大きく3つの観点を据えて、計8人による発表を行いました。

第２回となる今年度は、和歌山県立近代美術館において開催中の展覧会「トランスボーダー　和歌山とアメリカをめぐる移民と美術」展に関連して、より具体的に西海岸の芸術活動とその背景に眼を向けます。実作品や資料が隣にあるというまたとない機会に、日米双方の研究者が、それぞれの視点を共有しながら作品と歴史を見つめ、今後の研究への道筋を見出したいと思います。

なお本事業は文化庁「令和5年度 文化庁　Innovate MUSEUM事業」の補助を受けて実施するものです。

The Second International Symposium on Art and Migration

Japanese Immigrants on the American West Coast and Their Art Scene

Wakayama Prefecture is known for having the sixth-largest number of Japanese emigrants. Building upon this fact, various institutions within the prefecture have conducted research related to modern migration history, based on their expertise and regional characteristics. With the aim of actively connecting these individual efforts and fostering public understanding through knowledge sharing, the Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama has taken the lead in organizing the Executive Committee for International Exchange Programs on Migration Studies in Wakayama since 2022. We have chosen the framework of “international” rather than confining it to “Wakayama” because the historical phenomenon of migration, spanning from the modern era to the present, cannot be fully comprehended from a single perspective, but rather should be examined from the dual viewpoints of emigration and immigration.

In 2022, the inaugural year of the project, we initiated a collaboration with the Japanese American National Museum (JANM), intending to lay the foundation for research exchange. In December, we hosted a symposium titled “The Current State of Research Concerning the Relationship Between Wakayama and the U.S.” At this event, we welcomed researchers from both domestic and international institutions with the primary objective of sharing the existing research results and perspectives. The symposium featured presentations by eight speakers with a focus on three main themes: the collection of migration research materials, individual studies on Wakayama-related artists, and comprehensive approaches to the history of migration art.

This year, we are organizing a second symposium that more specifically focuses on the activities of West Coast artists and their backgrounds, in relation to our ongoing exhibition “Transbordering: Migration and Art Across Wakayama and the U.S.A.” Taking advantage of this unique opportunity to have actual artworks and historical materials in the gallery, researchers from both Japan and the United States will share their respective perspectives by looking at the works and their history. This event will further advance research on both sides.
