1963年に和歌山城内で開館した和歌山県立美術館を前身とする当館は、1970年11月、日本で5番目の公立近代美術館として県民文化会館の1階に開館しました。そこで23年あまり活動したのち、1994年に現在の黒川紀章の設計による建物へ移転し、展示・保存環境を拡充させてミュージアムとしての活動を続けています。 コレクションは和歌山ゆかりの作家を中心として、創作版画、関西の戦後美術などへその範囲を広げ、現在では海外の作家も含め、総数1万点を超える作品を収蔵しています。コレクション展では、所蔵品を通じて幅広い美術の表現に接していただけるよう、季節ごとに展示を替え、その紹介を続けています。 

今回は特集展示として、造本家・大家利夫（おおいえ・としお）の作品を紹介します。
大家利夫は1949年、東京に生まれました。15歳の頃から限定本の世界に惹かれるようになり、18歳の時、 オペラ歌手 藤原義江を訪ねて同氏の著作『きりすとの涙』の個人出版を実現させたのが本作りの始まりでした。その後、1970年に渡仏し、1971年から1974年にかけてフランス国立エスティエンヌ印刷工芸高等学院で、フランスの伝統工芸である箔押と手工製本（ルリュール）、工業製本全般を学びます。在学中からフリーの箔押師として仕事を始め、製本工芸の名品を生み出したことで知られるジベール・バレ・デザイン事務所やデルモン・デュバル工房で働いて研鑽を積みました。1974年、帰国して大家利夫美術装丁工房を設立。1984年にはあらたに指月社（しげつしゃ）を設立し、詩人や翻訳者、研究者、そして柄澤齊、スザンヌ・トライス ター、山本容子、渡辺和雄、森村泰昌、O Junといった美術家やデザイナーたちの良き理解者・協力者として伴走しつつ、内容、材料、印刷、製本、頒布のすべてに心血を注ぐ、世界でもほかに類をみない個人出版社となりました。その完成度を極めた仕事は高く評価され、2012年にはロサンゼルス・カウンティ美術館で個展が開催されています。日本の工芸への造詣を深め、あたかも茶碗を手にした時のようなふっくらとした手触りも、大家作品の特色といえるでしょう。本のために、挑戦を続けて完成された、作品としての本がそこにあります。 

また今年2月から4月にかけて開催した「とびたつとき 池田満寿夫とデモクラートの作家」展において、1950年代から60年代にかけての彼らの作品を紹介したのに続き、池田満寿夫の1960年代から80年代の作品を広島市現代美術館の協力により特集します。

Special Feature: All for the Books—The Works by Ohie Toshio

The Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama (MoMAW), formerly the Wakayama Prefectural Museum of Art which opened in Wakayama Castle in 1963, was established as the 5th public museum of modern art in Japan in November 1970. It was located on the first floor of the Wakayama Prefectural Cultural Hall.  After working there for over 23 years, the museum moved to its current building designed by Kurokawa Kisho in 1994. The new MoMAW enhances the environments of exhibition and conservation and keeps the activities as the museum.

The collection is mainly on the artists related to Wakayama and it has expanded the ranges to prints and postwar art from the Kansai region.  Now it houses over 10,000 works, including those by foreign artists.  “Collections” has changed the exhibits seasonally to show the extensive artistic expressions through the works in the collection.

The exhibition of this season is featuring the works of a comprehensive bookbinding artist Ohie Toshio.  He was born in Tokyo in 1949.  He was fascinated by the world of the books of limited editions around 15 years old.  It was the beginning of his career that he achieved the self-publishing of the book, “Kirisuto no Namida (Tears of Christ)” by opera singer Fujiwara Yoshie, when Ohie visited him in 18 years old.  After that, he went to France in 1970.  He has learned traditional French crafts such as dorure sur cuir (gilding on leather) and relieure (handicraft binding) and industrial bookbinding in general at　École supérieure Estienne des arts et industries graphiques　from 1971 to 1974.　While still in school, he began working as a freelance gilder.  He studied hard by working Réalisations graphiques Gilbert Balé and Établissements Dermont-Duval known for creating masterpieces of bookbinding crafts.  He came back to Japan and established Réalisations reliures d’art Toshio Ohie (Ohie Studio) in 1974.  He also established SHIGETSUSHA PUBLICATIONS Ltd. in 1984.  He, as a confidant and collaborator, accompanies poets, translators, researchers, artists and designers such as Karasawa Hitoshi, Suzanne Treister, Yamamoto Yoko, Watanabe Kazuo, Morimura Yasumasa and O Jun.  He puts his heart and soul into all the content, materials, printing, binding, and distribution of the books. Shigetsusha becomes the private press unlike any other in the world. His works, which are the ultimate in perfection, gain high praise and recognition worldwide. The Solo Exhibition was held at Los Angeles County Museum of Art in 2012.  He has deepened his knowledges of Japanese arts and crafts.  The plump texture, as if one is holding a tea bowl in one’s hands, is also characteristic of Ohie’s works. There are the books there, as works of art, that completed through continuous challenges for the books.

The exhibition “Moment to Fly Up—Ikeda Masuo and the Demokrato Artists” held from February to April introduced their works in 1950’s and 60’s. Ikeda Masuo’s works since 1960’s are exhibited in cooperation of Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art.
